Ruby Rose deletes Twitter after Batwoman casting drama
What happened? The general assumption from many on Twitter, though unconfirmed, is that she left in the midst of a backlash to her being cast as the character. We know we saw there were some people who felt like a Jewish actress should have been cast instead, just as there were others who either didn’t appreciate her acting in other roles or even her past discussions on her sexuality. The latter seemed to lead to her posting the following message on her account:
Where on earth did “Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman” come from – has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with “she’s too gay” how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change.
Rose still has her Instagram account, but has not commented on the matter there.

Is there a lesson to take away from all of this here? If there is, it’s probably something that we knew long beforehand: Social media can often be a difficult, toxic place. Rose has had her own fair share of miscues using it over time, and there were certainly some who did fire some vitriol at her in the aftermath of the casting news. Note that there is a clear distinction here between someone disagreeing with her casting / offering intelligent criticism and then being an outright hateful jerk. Not every person should be lumped into either category.
Ultimately, though, we don’t think the idea of a #RecastBatwoman hashtag (we’ve seen it around) is going to really go anywhere. The CW took their time making this announcement and it would be more than just a surprise if they were to walk it back.
As always, we do welcome some of your thoughts on this story below.
