Why did Ruth Wilson leave The Affair? More 4×08 discussion

The Affair season 4

Why did Ruth Wilson leave The Affair? We are still reeling from what happened tonight, but we do have more insight as to why it went down.

Seeing Alison’s death via (apparent) suicide was incredibly devastating, but as it turns out, there was a rather-simple reason for it behind the scenes. As it turns out, it was Wilson’s own decision to leave the show, and executive producer Sarah Treem chose to honor that request. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she made it clear that this season was filmed in a way in which she could be wrapped filming earlier than everyone else:

Ruth wanted to leave the show. That was a request, so that was decided basically before we started writing. It wasn’t a discovery of any kind. That was very deliberate. And actually, we shot all of her work first. Her whole storyline was shot before we shot anything else.

One other thing that Treem stresses repeatedly in this interview is that as of this writing, we still do not know the full story when it comes to Alison. There is more that we are going to learn, and we could find out about it next week (read more about it here). This episode is going to revolve more around Alison’s final days — we’ll hopefully learn if there is something more to Ben beyond what we know right now; we definitely do think that there are some potentially interesting and/or dangerous things about this man that we don’t know just yet. We do know that he is messed-up enough to pretend to be a valuable source of help for Alison, when in reality he was someone sneaking around behind his wife’s back. Who knows what else he is capable of.

We are curious now to also see what Wilson does next — personally, we’ll be leading the movement to get her back on Luther, but that’s just us.
