Why did Ruth Wilson leave The Affair? More 4×08 discussion
Seeing Alison’s death via (apparent) suicide was incredibly devastating, but as it turns out, there was a rather-simple reason for it behind the scenes. As it turns out, it was Wilson’s own decision to leave the show, and executive producer Sarah Treem chose to honor that request. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she made it clear that this season was filmed in a way in which she could be wrapped filming earlier than everyone else:
Ruth wanted to leave the show. That was a request, so that was decided basically before we started writing. It wasn’t a discovery of any kind. That was very deliberate. And actually, we shot all of her work first. Her whole storyline was shot before we shot anything else.
One other thing that Treem stresses repeatedly in this interview is that as of this writing, we still do not know the full story when it comes to Alison. There is more that we are going to learn, and we could find out about it next week (read more about it here). This episode is going to revolve more around Alison’s final days — we’ll hopefully learn if there is something more to Ben beyond what we know right now; we definitely do think that there are some potentially interesting and/or dangerous things about this man that we don’t know just yet. We do know that he is messed-up enough to pretend to be a valuable source of help for Alison, when in reality he was someone sneaking around behind his wife’s back. Who knows what else he is capable of.
We are curious now to also see what Wilson does next — personally, we’ll be leading the movement to get her back on Luther, but that’s just us.

Alison was my favorite character, I found the whole thing heartbreaking! I guess she had her reasons for leaving and that’s her prerogative but I loved her acting as this broken yet strong woman who had gone through so much. And I really wanted to see her and Cole have their second chance!

Her death in Ep8 was bad enough, but to see the sadness in this episode was devastating. I love her character and really want her to take charge of her life and get back with Cole….but I think we all know that would have never happened. I hate that Ruth is leaving…she is such an excellent actress. Can’t wait to see what happens next Sunday ….then that long, long wait until the next season.

Powerful, disturbing episode tonight. I love the show and love Allison. I cannot believe what’s happened to her. Wow!! She was such a complex character with so many flaws but she seemed to have bad things happen to her no matter what she did. I hate that Ruth Wilson is leaving the show What a wonderful actress she is. I can’t imagine season 5 without her. The show is awesome.

I’ve been watching and love the show. Cried my eyes out and while I’ve read it was the actress plan to leave, it’s so disappointing. I get it’s fiction but dang! Anxious to see her in her next project. So rooting for her and Cole. I’m wanting someone to wake up from a bad dream!

It was freaking depressing. I couldn’t believe they killed her off just when i thought she was getting her happy ending with Cole. I love Cole !!!!!

We are devastated to the point that we have not decided whether to continue watching. A group of us watch the show together and flat out both male and female like the character, Alison, as well as, Ruth Wilson, the best.
Among my professional colleagues as well we sincerely want to say “Get her Back! NOW!”
