Outlander season 5: When could it start casting new roles?

We know that writing about Outlander season 5 is such a strange thing given that we’re many months away from it even filming, let alone anything else. Yet, we do think that there are still some conversations worth having, mostly because speculating over the future is one of our favorite things to do when it comes to the series.

With that in mind, let’s address casting within this article! When is the right time for the series to actually start looking to book new roles? With every book in the Diana Gabaldon series comes new characters, and with that more work for the casting team to do behind the scenes.

Yet, are we still too far away from season 5 filming to really start the search inn a big way right now? It feels like it, given that season 4 is not premiering until November and there hasn’t been too much said about it at all just yet.

What we can say is this: Last year, there were notices that started to show up for Outlander season 4 at least a couple of months before filming began. With that in mind, don’t be surprised if come November or early December, there starts to be talk about casting again. (Filming for season 5 is slated for February.) One of the real values in doing casting early is that you want to give yourself the biggest possible pool of performers possible for your roles, provided that you know you are going to need them. While sometimes casting last-minute can work, it also is a little bit risky if you don’t find the right person in time. You also want to take your time in order to ensure that you filter through all possible candidates.

Our feeling is that come early next year, some roles will either be narrowed down or cast for season 5, but there probably will not be official announcements for some time still. Outlander has shown over the years that they often are in no hurry to announce casting, though they do like to do so before people are spotted filming around set.
