The Sinner season 2 slides in first live ratings — why?
The first episode of the series on Wednesday night drew a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic coupled with 1.15 million viewers. This marks a drop of more than 25% in both measurements from the first-season premiere last year.
Why the decline? We think that a lot of it probably has to do with the lack of Jessica Biel as an onscreen presence this season. Season 1 was her first major on-screen role on television in some time, and we think there was a natural curiosity to see what she would be like in this especially-dark role. She is still involved with the show as an executive producer, but that sort of curiosity may not be there in the same way that it was.
Beyond just this, we do also think that the loss of the limited series label may be another factor. There were likely some people who got on board The Sinner last year thinking that this was just an eight-episode show that they could enjoy before moving on to other things. However, that isn’t exactly the case now. Not everyone who even enjoyed the original may have wanted more from this world.

If there is a silver lining here moving forward, it’s that the ratings for season 1 actually increased through many of the weeks ahead. The reviews for season 2 to date have been very good, so there is a chance something similar happens here.
