Criminal Minds season 14 spotlight: Why lies ahead for Matt Simmons?
Let’s kick things off here by giving the writers a little bit of credit for successfully transitioning Daniel Henney over to this show. That move is actually a little more complicated than it would appear on the surface, largely due to the simple fact that Beyond Borders had its own mythology and history with the character. You want to honor that, but also present the character here in a way that doesn’t make you feel like you are perpetually lost and/or confused as to what’s going on with him. The show introduced his wife, showcased his personality, and allowed you to see his effectiveness as an agent.
So, where could they go moving forward into season 14? We like to think that we do have a number of creative ideas on that particular subjects within.
1. More of his life outside of the team – Matt is a father and we rarely see that on Criminal Minds — luckily, it does feel like there is going to be an opportunity to dive into that. Also, give us more Kelly Frye and allow us to see the secrets to the success of his marriage.
2. A unique way to bring in his Beyond Borders past – Maybe you find a way to bring in a former cast member from that show onto Criminal Minds for a guest spot. Or, maybe the BAU is forced to take on an UnSub who was seemingly dealt with by the International Response Team first. Simmons will know the character better than anyone and has an invaluable level of experience to tap into.
3. Some of his own hobbies – Beyond just solving cases and being a family man, what does Simmons do on his down time? We’d like to see some more quirks within his personality that help to make him even more relatable to the average viewer watching at home like we have with characters like Rossi.
4. More scenes with Matt and Luke – There has already been a bromance brewing here ad we’ve seen Matt giving Luke advice on his dating life when he was just starting to get to know Lisa. There’s a really nice on screen chemistry with these two and we would love to see this friendship develop further where they lean on each other for help in both their personal lives as well as their work.

Matt Simmons seems to be an ok player with the BAU team, but much like Kate and Blake was. Also, Prentiss and Luke. I think there are too many players. I love CM. I adore Aaron Hotchner. With all that is going on with CBS, surely it shouldn’t be a problem at bringing him back! Apologies seem filtered and accepted in different directions. ? Sidebar: I saw that the new series Magnum P.I. comes out on Wed. this fall w/ the very handsome actor Jay Hernandez. Who has been bumped?
