Outlander surprise unfolds with Sam Heughan at The Spy Who Dumped Me event

What was the big Outlander surprise that was teased so frequently by Entertainment Tonight throughout the day?

Well, we should start here by noting that the longer the hype went on for this, the clearer that it started to become that it was somehow linked to the upcoming New York fan screening of The Spy Who Dumped Me. That made the most sense, given the fact that Sam Heughan was already in New York and, beyond just that, the movie is being distributed by Lionsgate … which just so happens to own Starz. When you start to put the pieces together, and also remember that this screening was meant to round up a bunch of Outlander fans into a movie theater at the same time, there’s a fairly simple assumption that you can start to draw: That there was going to be some sort of good stuff involving Sam at the event.

Suffice it to say, we weren’t shocked when Heughan turned up at the event with ET’s Leanne Aguilera for a surprise Q&A session. The two talked briefly about the movie, but of course also about Outlander. He joked that he was “trying to make [the fans] stronger” with the longer Droughtlander. The show isn’t premiering until November! Sam also joked that production made Scotland feel like North Carolina by putting a bunch of fast-food places everywhere. (Pretty good burn if you ask us.) He did take some advice from Diana Gabaldon in exploring North Carolina and understanding its history and culture better.

Overall, he said that season 4 “sets the picture” for the two seasons that follow, which have already been officially renewed, and also called Fraser’s Ridge “Fraser’s Fridge” due to how cold it was filming there during a difficult Scottish winter. The good news is that season 5 is starting production a little bit later and with that, they could avoid at least a good month and a half of Scottish winter. He expressed gratitude to Outlander for continuing to allow him to do some other things, whether it be The Spy Who Dumped Me or also Bloodshot, his upcoming film.
