New Buffy the Vampire Slayer series won’t try to ‘replace’ iconic characters
In a new post on Twitter (which CarterMatt has for you to check out below), the proposed series’ writer in Monica Owusu-Breen (Midnight, Texas) makes it very clear that she is an enormous fan of the original series, and has as deep of an emotional attachment to the show as any fan. With that, she is not trying to just replace Buffy, Angel, Spike, Willow, or any of the other iconic characters from the original Joss Whedon series. This is meant to be a more contemporary take on the show, one that could potentially even be set within the same universe. Basically, this could be thought of as more of a continuation that a reboot.
Granted, we’re still left with questions — take, for example, what you title the show since we don’t think you can really name it Buffy unless it is really about the famed character as played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. We think they would likely have to go in a slightly different direction there. Also, we do wonder how you are prepared to squelch the inevitable backlash that is going to come just due to the show’s own existence. This may be something that Owusu-Breen and Whedon (who is involved as an executive producer) may be prepared for on some level, but it could still be a challenge for them.

At the moment, this Buffy universe show does still remain in the early stages and it’s far too early to know one way or another if it is going to end up making it on the air. Given the sheer amount of revivals / remakes that are out there at the moment, it may have a chance no matter the backlash. Just look at how upset people are over Charmed… it hasn’t stopped the show from being remade.
