Entering Outlander season 5, what will the biggest challenge be?

Outlander

Filming on Outlander season 4 recently concluded, and it’s already been confirmed, in turn, that there will be a season 5 and 6 for the series on Starz. When it comes to the show’s future on television, there is nothing to worry about.

Yet, are there things that should be a source of debate when it comes to the series’ future and how to get more episodes together? Certainly, mostly because Outlander is an exceptionally challenging show. You’re having to put together a story set in multiple time periods and different parts of the world. Even if you are using Scotland as a home base for almost all of it, there are still a number of obstacles that you face.

Moving into season 5, at least production by and large isn’t going to have the same challenge as they did entering season 4, when they had to figure out how to paint the picture of North Carolina while remaining in Scotland for filming. They now have some of the groundwork laid for that, and we imagine that they will even reuse many of the same sets. There’s less of a nomadic feel to what the series is doing now, and that may especially feel like it’s the case with Brianna heading back into the past.

Yet, there are still some significant challenges that lie ahead, with one of the biggest ones in season 5 being how to adapt some of the source material that is coming up. While season 5 and 6 are meant to be based on The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the material may be combined in a different way than it was within the first four seasons. There are different challenges with the adaptation this time and, beyond that, there’s also just the challenge of maintaining characters for such a significant stretch.

Think about things this way — while in some ways it’s easier to write for characters once you know them so much better, in other ways it’s more of a challenge since you have to think more in terms of continuity and believability. Is what they’re doing now in character with what they were doing so many seasons before? We think that keeping things stable and keeping arcs and storylines in line will be just about as big of a challenge as adapting the source material — which in some ways always gets harder as shows go along since there’s a butterfly effect that comes with every time you make a change.

Outlander season 5 won’t start filming until February, and with that the writers have time to figure everything out. We also have the utmost faith in them; they’ve earned that through everything else we’ve seen from them to date.
