Outlander costume designer Terry Dresbach leaving after season 4

It is not often that you have breaking Outlander news of this capacity to report about on a Sunday, but this is big given that we are talking about the imminent departure of costume designer Terry Dresbach. She is coming directly off of an Emmy nomination for her and her team during season 3; we supposed that if you are going to leave, why not go out at the top of your game?

Dresbach confirmed her exit in a series of posts on Twitter, one where she confirmed that with many characters now at Fraser’s Ridge, this feels like the right time to depart. She also reassured everyone that she will still be around to discuss her work on social media no matter when they have questions, and made it clear that she was departing for the sake of her health and also to have more time with her friends and family. Because of the work that she has done already, we feel confident that she is always going to be connected to Outlander and its world in one form or another.

It’s understandable why working on a series like Outlander could be exhausting, especially when you consider the sheer number of costumes and periods that have been on the air through four seasons. There are not only multiple decades to research and produce, but also multiple continents and cultures! The costumes have to be period-accurate and functional, especially in a social-media age in which it’s so easy for everyone to just shout their opinion from their own personal mountaintop.

We’ll be the first to admit that we are not an expert on the ins and outs of anything fashion-related, and with that, we cannot speak to the specific craft of costume designing. What we do know is this: Dresbach has done some of the greatest work in all of TV and film the past several years and she’s set the bar very high for whoever leads the team from here. We do recommend giving the Outlander Costume Twitter account a follow, given that Dresbach explains much of it in a way where it is easy for even neophytes to understand.
