The Affair season 4 episode 5 preview: The story of Vik’s life
The last time the series focused on this character two weeks ago, we learned that Vik was so desperate to cover up his illness for one night, just so that he could make his parents happy that their entire lives were really worth it. That was a big move for him to make, but one that was quickly interrupted soon after by Helen deciding that they really needed to know what was going on. That was her own big move, but it was one that devastated their relationship. Vik could’ve been more open with how he was feeling, but at the same time Helen could’ve also realized that this was his life and his family. We don’t want to use the words “at fault” here, mostly because every character involved here wasn’t trying to do anything more than to do an okay job with everything that was presented to them in the moment.
In the sneak peek over at the link here, you can see Vik really pour his heart out in a way that we have not seen before, but it is not actually to Helen. Instead, it is to neighbor Sierra (Emily Browning), who we imagine could be a subject of an affair all her own. Vik makes it clear that for the entirety of his life, he’s made almost every decision with his parents in mind. Much of that stems from his family’s immigrant background, that they did so much for him to have a better life that he feels like he, at least on some level, owes them. He wants to make sure that they are able to be proud. Yet, he’s now looking at the end of his life and really wondering what he’s really done without having them on his mind for a part of it. Being with Helen, who already had kids, was a rebellious move against them in some ways, but they were still on his mind.
In the end, all of this suggests that there’s an excellent episode of The Affair coming that is going to play with both your senses and all of your emotions.
