Cloak & Dagger episode 7 review: With our powers combined…

Did Cloak & Dagger episode 7 just make us think, even for only a minute, that Tandy and Tyrone could be heroes? It certainly felt like it.

For the record, “Lotus Eaters” happened to also be one of the most thoughtful, powerful episodes of the season and one of the best of any superhero show in 2018. It offered up a thorough exploration of Tandy and Tyrone’s powers, when combined, and then also a chance to see them understand each other better.

The two came together tonight in a way that they haven’t before largely with one specific goal in mind: Trying to find a way in which to get information from Ivan Hess, the one way in which Tandy thought that she could get help on resolving what happened with her father. What she uncovered with Tyrone’s help was so much more — an alternate reality of Ivan’s and one that enabled her to actually speak to her father again … even though it wasn’t entirely real.

There were a few moments within this episode that felt like the NBC series Reverie, mostly in seeing how Tandy, once she had the ability to speak to her father, didn’t want to leave. It was up to Ty in order to convince her that she needed to leave this world in order to take care of herself — there was only so much that could be gained from being there.

While she didn’t get all the answers right now, what Tandy and Tyrone offered up here was a sense of healing. Their powers were able to heal Ivan’s mind; by the end of the episode, he was awake and actually able to have a conversation with his daughter Mina again. These are the building blocks that could give Tandy some of the answers that she so seeks; beyond that, we do like to think that these characters will be able to help more people in the future, at least if this is something that they would like to do.

As if seeing Ivan back in the real world wasn’t powerful enough, there was something very poignant about the rap music at the end of the episode, a connection between Tyrone and Billy that he can now cherish. Effectively, it was an opportunity for him to be able to hear Billy’s voice again and recognize him something that he did not think previously that he was going to be able to do.

CarterMatt Verdict

Cloak & Dagger episode 7 was an episode about more than just saving Ivan Hess and getting Tandy one step closer to getting the answers she seeks. It is just as much about how she and Tyrone are now clear than ever before and possess a new-found sense of teamwork and understanding that may help them beyond measure in the future.

Also, kudos to Cloak & Dagger for casting Tim Kang as Ivan Hess — he’s one of those guys who we love to see in virtually every show he’s in.
