Beyond Grey’s Anatomy season 15, what’s the show’s long-term future?
Let’s kick things off here with a refresher as to where things are at the moment. Grey’s Anatomy officially was renewed for its fifth season a little bit earlier this year, following Ellen Pompeo signing an official two-year deal in order to return as Meredith Grey. Pompeo’s deal does not equal a guarantee that the series is going to make it to season 16, but we do think it does prove that the ABC series is thinking in terms of the long-term and isn’t just trying to wrap things up soon.
There’s very little reason, after all, for Grey’s Anatomy to want to shut things down. For starters, this is one of the most-popular series that ABC has, and its success does not even show in the live+same-day ratings. It is enormously successful in terms of how it performs on Netflix, and its performance there is really one of the reasons why its ratings have held on so well. While it has managed to lose a number of viewers over time, it has also figured out a way to keep some other ones. Basically, it has been able to balance things out in a way that is so much better than other shows that don’t have that new viewership coming in.
Beyond just this, but creatively, there’s no reason to think that Grey’s Anatomy is near an end, either. Krista Vernoff only returned to the show last summer and we have to think that she has many more ideas as to where to take things from here. We also imagine that there could be a new character or two coming in. Given that this is a hospital environment, there’s always potential to bring in new people and tell new stories.
There are some shows we write about where we get the sense that they could be nearing the end, but Grey’s Anatomy is not one of them. It feels a lot like Law & Order: SVU in that it just seems like it could go on forever, or at least how long Pompeo wants to do it. She is the beating heart of Grey’s Anatomy and it is really hard to imagine the series continuing on without her.
