Better Call Saul season 4: Vince Gilligan on Walt – Jesse cameo debate
Personally, we’ve long felt that the show doesn’t need it. The appeal of Better Call Saul is the story of Jimmy’s transformation into Saul rather than just waiting to see a series of assorted Breaking Bad cameos, and turning the series into a waiting game for various stars to show up just doesn’t feel right. Luckily, it doesn’t seem like that is a priority for series boss Vince Gilligan or anyone else within the writers room. While there is an apparent desire to feature some more characters from the original show, Gilligan understands that there needs to be more than just some sort of clever cameo to make longtime fans happy. If he’s going to do it, he wants to do it right. That’s something that he described further in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“[I]t wouldn’t feel as satisfying if it was just a cameo or an Alfred Hitchcock walkthrough … I think we’ve waited long enough. We d–n well better have a good reason for them to show up. I just hope we figure it out because I’ve got to hear, ‘Yeah, b—h!’ one more time.”
The one way in which we think appearances from Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul could work is if Better Call Saul eventually gets to the point where Jimmy is Saul and it’s in the same timeline as the original show — you could do that and present sort of Saul’s perspective of events. There’s probably only so much mileage you could get out of events we’ve already seen, but it could work for a couple of weeks. (Personally, though, we’d rather see Gene.)
