Our hopes for a Wynonna Earp season 4 renewal — and the possible timing of it

It’s funny how so many of us operate as television fans in 2018. Take, for example, Wynonna Earp. Even though the season 3 premiere is three weeks away at the time of this writing, it’s still really hard to focus on that. Instead, we still find ourselves looking towards the future and a season 4 that isn’t quite official at the moment.

There is a part of our brain that wants to think about the idea of season 4 as something that is inevitable and is going to happen really regardless of anything else in the world. Yet, that’s still not assured. Television is a business and regardless of how many times Wynonna Earp trends on social media or has devoted fans, it does still need to have solid ratings. We don’t think that it necessarily needs to grow its audience, but it can’t lose a lot of viewers, either. This is a show that doesn’t have an enormous viewer base on Syfy — it has embraced that underdog spirit. Nonetheless, viewers are essential and it needs to maintain them.

So, realistically, when could a season 4 renewal be announced, provided everything happens the way in which we want it to? We’re thinking in terms of late August / early September. Given that the Comic-Con panel is happening right around the time of the premiere this year, we don’t anticipate another surprise renewal happening then. The network’s going to want to see at least a few weeks of ratings, especially when it comes to the DVR ratings / streaming numbers, before making a decision. They don’t have to confirm a renewal until at some point much later this year, but we don’t think that the network is going to make us wait that long. It just runs against what we’ve seen in terms of Syfy’s attitude towards Wynonna Earp — while they haven’t always made us happy with some of their cancellations, we have some faith in them here. They’ve shown themselves to be pretty loyal Earpers to the cause.
