The current Outlander season 5 timeline — at least so far
To be specific, what could the timeline be when it comes to making season 5 happen? We’ve indicated already that we don’t envision season 5 will premiere until 2020, mostly because it tends to take more than a year to make an individual season of the show and we don’t foresee that changing — even with season 5 running one episode shorter than seasons 2 through 4.
Beyond just that, though, there are a few other important time-frames to note. For starters, when the writers room will most likely open: Think along the lines of this fall. Typically, we see the writers convene a handful of months before the start of filming and we imagine that will be the case again here — unless, of course, they want to just get the scripts done earlier and take a break for a while after that. No matter what happens, there are some unique challenges coming, especially since Outlander season 5 could choose to approach the source material differently. We know that seasons 5 and 6 are meant to cover the fifth and six books in Diana Gabaldon’s series, but they may not necessarily do so in as linear a fashion as we’ve seen in the past.
Moving into the fall, we also have a feeling that location scouting is going to start ramping up, and everyone behind the scenes should start getting together some of their casting notices. These are not things that can be put together at the last minute, mostly because by the time that filming begins, everything needs to be put together. You also have to start casting early enough so that you have a good pool of actors available.
Filming as of right now is slated to begin in February. With that holiday break in December, we feel like pre-production and so much more may be started earlier in the fall to compensate for that. Outlander has a tendency of being one of the most-prepared and professional shows out there.
