Grey’s Anatomy season 15 spotlight: What’s next for Alex Karev?
Moving into season 15, it feels pretty clear that Alex is in an interesting spot. While he is now married to Jo, she’s got an opportunity elsewhere and with that, you do have to wonder if he could spend some time in the early going this season elsewhere. That’s possible, but at the same time Grey’s Anatomy is about the Seattle family. We just have a hard time seeing Jo and Alex departing for good — if that was going to happen, wouldn’t ABC have announced some sort of cast departures?
Assuming that Alex and Jo are still at the Grey Sloan while the show returns this fall, the first thing that we want to see is rather clear: A good picture as to what married life is like. Are things different for these two, or just an extension of everything we’ve seen of everything so far? What are their goals? We do want to see them happy for a little while, mostly because happy marriages aren’t something we actually get to see all that much of within the world of Grey’s Anatomy.
Beyond just that, how about giving us a reasonably good sense as to what Alex is going to be up to next in medicine on the other side of the surgical-contest storyline? It’d be nice to see him do some more stuff that is super-personal just because that’s where Justin Chambers really tends to shine. Give him a good guest star to work alongside and the performance should be electric.
Of course, it also feels fair to ask this question both Alex’s job and where he is in life now: Is he ready to become a father? The main reason we’re interested about this is that it could bring him back to his own childhood and some of what he went through there — we do wonder, in turn, if there’s a chance to bring in Lindsay Wagner for another appearance as his mother.
In general, Alex Karev is an iconic character in Grey’s Anatomy — he’s passionate, he’s real, and he’s great at his job. It feels easy to say that we want him to have a super-meaty role with a lot of depth.
