Ed Sheeran’s Game of Thrones cameo still drawing strong reactions
Speaking in a new interview with The Huffington Post, actor Kristain Nairn (most known for playing Hodor on the HBO series) made it very clear that he holds a particular level of disdain for some of the cameos that happen on the show — and he singles this one out more so than any other:
“I’m not a fan of the cameos in Game of Thrones. I don’t like them. I think it’s stupid. I don’t mind going on the record on that. I just think it takes you right out of the world … Especially Ed Sheeran. I was like, ‘Why is Ed Sheeran here?’ I mean, Ed Sheeran’s great. He’s a great guy, great musician, but why is he in Game of Thrones?”
Nairn has a point here, mostly in that even with some of the other cameos from musicians over the years, they’ve mostly had background roles. (Will Champion of Coldplay is a good example of that.) Sheeran had a speaking part and while he certainly wasn’t bad by any means, he was also not needed since all anyone thought while he was on the show was “oh, that’s Ed Sheeran.” It didn’t help that production didn’t really do anything to try to mask his character. Maybe if they at least put him in some makeup or tried to transform him in some capacity, it could have been a little less obvious that he was just randomly spending time with Arya Stark. This show doesn’t need that.
Now that we’ve said all of this, may we remind you of Ed Sheeran’s defense? He got offered a chance to be a part of one of television’s greatest shows and if Game of Thrones comes calling and offers you a chance to be a part of their world, how many people are really going to say no?
