Famous in Love canceled at Freeform; no season 3 coming
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is ending due to negotiations falling through between Freeform and Hulu, who were the streaming partner for the series. Freeform apparently wanted more money for the series, which is not a significant performer in the live+same-day ratings. When that didn’t happen, that caused the network to pull the plug. The show also isn’t altogether cheap, as it does feature a familiar star and also hails in part from an outside studio. All of these probably proved to be factors in the show’s undoing.
The THR report also notes that there were some contentious moments on set throughout the second season, including supposed clashes between Thorne and executive producer Marlene King. They also claim that Thorne actively wanted off of the show and declined to participate at times for social-media sessions during the show airing.
This is the second major cancellation over at Freeform this year and it does raise some questions as to what’s going on over at the network — yet, we don’t foresee Famous in Love having the same sort of chance at another home given that its ratings were not as strong during its run and beyond that, it doesn’t have the built-in audience internationally that Shadowhunters has. This is probably going to mark the end of the series, and that is a shame for some people out there who really enjoyed getting to see this show’s take on Hollywood and some of its various ins and outs. This series did succeed very much on presenting a very different side of Hollywood than what we’re used to seeing on some other shows. That sort of voice and creativity is somewhat-missed across the rest of the entertainment landscape.
Luckily, fans of King’s work should note that her Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists is coming in the future.
Update – King denies friction between herself and Thorne
Update 2 – A rep for Freeform does claim that Famous in Love may still be alive
