The Resident season 2: Moran Atias, Merrin Dungey leaving

Resident episode 1

There is even more chaos now out there regarding The Resident season 2 — after all, Moran Atias and Merrin Dungey are leaving the series.

According to a report from Deadline, the two performers are departing the series alongside Melina Kanakaredes, whose exit as Dr. Lane Hunter was expected based on the course of the first season. Dungey has already transferred over to a new job in The Fix, which is slated to premiere at midseason.

Losing all of these characters at once is tough, but story-wise it’s easy to see precisely how we got to this point. Atias played Renata Morali while Dungey Claire Thorpe, and the two characters had their exits set up to a certain extent. With there being so many changes when it comes to the top of hospital operations (Thorpe was already removed as CEO), you could see the writing on the wall.

As for exciting new additions, know this: You’re going to be seeing Jane Leeves come on board! Per the aforementioned report, the Hot in Cleveland alum is set to appear as a series regular as Dr. Kitt Voss, a star orthopedic surgeon who actually is a good role model and mentor for some of the other characters — think the opposite of Dr. Bell in that sense. The report still notes that she “attracts the moving eye of Dr. Bell,” while also still getting into some serious drama with AJ “The Raptor” Austin (newly-promoted Malcolm-Jamal Warner).

New episodes of The Resident season 2 are going to premiere this fall and the majority of the rest of the core cast is slated to return. While exits are sad, we do feel like it’s organic in a sense to life at a hospital where many things often happening behind the scenes. Just as in life, characters would often come and go.
