The Resident season 2: Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Glenn Morshower upped to series regular
Fox’s The Resident has announced that Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Glenn Morshower have been upped to series regulars.
According to Deadline, after the pair recurred during the first season and after the events of season 1, the writers have decided to make them both part of the action during season 2. If fans will recall Warner plays AJ Austin a.k.a.The Raptor, “a larger-than-life cardio-thoracic surgeon whose uncontrollable personality makes him a grave liability within the hospital walls.” Morshower plays Marshall Winthrop, Conrad’s estranged father and new chairman of the board at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital.
The decision to make them full-time characters is a smart decision because both characters add an element to the show that was missing. Warner’s Austin has a personality that makes fans hate and like him. He’s arrogant, but has been working on trying to care for the patients after Dr. Mina Okafor commented on his bedside manner. He challenges the residents more so on their skills and talents, which makes them want to strive to be the best. His character adds another villainous dynamic to the show, but he isn’t your typical villain. Dr. Austin isn’t out to ruin anyone’s career or cover up mistakes, he’s there to be the person that pushes the residents harder than ever before, while simultaneously showing them he’s the best.
As for Morshower’s Winthrop, we also sense a villainous spirit about him. While he may be Conrad’s father and want the best for him, we can’t help but feel that his recent move as chairman of the board at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital has alternative motives. The way he stared down Dr. Randolph Bell in the Season 1 finale made the hairs on the back of our necks stand up because his look signaled to Bell that he was in charge now. Bell’s once-powerful reign was over the moment Winthrop became chairman and after all the secrets Bell has, it’s no wonder he is nervous. Needless to say Season 2 is going to be wild.
In addition to Morshower and Warner, the series also stars Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greenwood, Emily VanCamp, Moran Atias, Merrin Dungey, Shaunette Renée Wilson and Melina Kanakaredes.
