Last Week Tonight with John Oliver offers Anthony Bourdain tribute, G7 talk

Last Week Tonight

This week’s edition of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver had the potential to focus on many different subjects, whether it be Donald Trump, the G7, Justin Trudeau, Kim Jong-un, and whatever the feature piece would be.

With that being said, we do want to point out the subtle, lovely tribute to Anthony Bourdain that the HBO show delivered within the opening seconds of the episode. The tribute happened in the midst of the show’s theme song, right before going to Oliver at his desk. This is typically the spot that Last Week Tonight uses for some of their tributes — they are not always big or bold, but they do resonate and make an impact.

Of course, following this Oliver then got into some of the other news of the week, which included him making his thoughts very clear about Trump and Kim Jong-un. We had a little bit of talk about this; yet, Oliver didn’t necessarily spend too long on it before getting to a lot of other discussion points — including Rodrigo Roa Duterte and a certain bit of “kissing” drama that has gone on as of late.

This was a rather speedy opening to the show, which in itself a reminder that there were some other big subjects that the show wanted to get into. That included a main segment that was an update on Stupid Watergate, something that the show has touched on many different times in the past.
