Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Stupid Watergate update

Last Week Tonight

Tonight, Last Week with Tonight with John Oliver offered up an update to its ongoing Stupid Watergate series of segments. These are the segments in which Oliver offers up updates on what has become a very intense investigation led by Robert Mueller.

Specifically, tonight Oliver put most of his attention on the way in which the media is covering that — namely via Fox News. He showed that in a number of different forms, whether it be featuring numerous anchors using the words “witch hunt” while also giving you a chance to see a wide array of different Sean Hannity conspiracy theories. Basically, what many within the media are doing are create conspiracy theories in order to combat other conspiracy theories.

Did we really learn altogether new in here? Not exactly. However, we do think it was informative from the vantage point of showing more why certain demographics think and speak the way that they do. We all tend to follow the news that we choose to watch, and this is the message that Oliver was trying to drive home — though he did not go so far as to say that Trump was for sure guilty.

Eventually, this entire segment went into a direction we did not expect at all, with Oliver starting to draw parallels between this and the OJ Simpson trial.

The end of the show

One of Oliver’s best lines to date was referring to Great Britain as “America’s rough draft.” What we did learn through this segment was that apparently, it is illegal in the United Kingdom to show footage of Parliament in order to use it for comedic purposes. This is why last week, the country didn’t get to see the “And Now, This” portion of the program.

Hey, isn’t it nice to learn something new every now and then?

Here’s the funniest part of this: Knowing that the UK would not show his end segment tonight, he made it clear that he would be replacing it overseas with Gilbert Gottfried reading Yelp reviews.
