Nashville season 6 episode 9 review: Is anything really better?
Nashville season 6 episode 9 had a lot that it needed to address almost from the get-go. For starters, it had to resolve what happened to Will and then, following that, show what was going to be happening to the likes of Deacon after his incident with Brad and then also whether or not Juliette would ever return.
For most of the midseason premiere, though, much of Juliette’s story was on the back-burner as the show addressed a few other subjects, including Maddie’s new relationship with her super-famous beau. This is the sort of person who can open up the rink of the Nashville Predators in the blink of an eye.
With that being said, that wasn’t the biggest problem that Maddie found herself in, as Deacon was none too pleased with the idea of her drinking at such an early age. Much of that has to do with battling some of his own demons. He doesn’t want her to end up like him and because of that, he’s concerned that her getting drunk at 18 is setting up a terrible precedent for whatever else is coming up in the future.
One of the reasons why this was all at the forefront of Deacon’s mind is because of what was going on with Jessie and the sudden custody battle that she was in with Brad. Because of what happened between him and Deacon, he was going to use Deacon’s history against him. Deacon was terrified of being the reason that Jessie loses the ability to be around her son; because of that, Deacon was worried that breaking up with her would be his best course of action. He didn’t really want to do that, but he was left in a position where he didn’t exactly have a whole lot of options.
Ultimately, though, Deacon and Jessie have decided to fight whatever’s coming their way soon and we figure that this is just the beginning of a long battle for them. At least it seems like everyone is going to be on the same page with Maddie and Deacon coming to terms about everything.
CarterMatt Verdict
Overall, Nashville season 6 episode 9 proved itself to be a worthy return for the series, but given that this is a series that started so much with Rayna and Juliette, wouldn’t it have been nice to at least get more of the latter to kick off the home stretch? It’s still a good show, but it certainly has morphed considerably from the show that so many people really enjoyed early on in its run.
