Kidding trailer: Jim Carrey’s new Showtime series looks promising

With the right story backing him up, Jim Carrey has long been one of the most underrated actors out there. Take a look at The Truman Show or the incredible Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Now, Carrey’s getting a chance to mix comedy and drama on his upcoming Showtime series Kidding, and judging from the new trailer that we’ve got for this below, this could end up being one of the breakout hits of the fall. In it, Carrey plays a children’s entertainer by the name of Jeff Pickles on the verge of watching his life fall apart. While he is immensely successful, there are a number of major problems in his life. For example, his wife (Judy Greer) doesn’t want to be with him anymore and his son has zero respect for him. He’s also got a temper, and you see that manifest itself somewhat over the course of this trailer.

What is very interesting about the series conceptually is that when you think about it, there are a number of different ways in which this story could unfold. For starters, maybe this is a show about Jeff Pickles becoming some sort of psychopath; or, maybe this is just a simple story about a man having to find his inner peace while keeping his image alive. Despite how much this trailer gives you, there is still so much more it leaves out in the ether.

One thing that does excite us is the presence of Michel Gondry as an executive producer. He directed Carrey in Eternal Sunshine and is also on board as an occasional director for this series, as well.

Kidding will premiere on Showtime September 9, following the premiere of Shameless. Hopefully, we will have a chance to present some more coverage for you soon.
