How The Fosters spin-off Good Trouble will feel even more current

Following the three-part series finale set to air on Freeform starting Monday night, there will be more of The Fosters universe — albeit not for a little while. Work is being done at present on Good Trouble, a series that is featuring Cierra Ramirez and Maia Mitchell as Mariana and Callie at a different point in their lives. The two are going to be young adults, working to navigate life in their twenties within Los Angeles. They’re dealing with everything from financial difficulties to where they fit into the world — while also doing their part to bring about change. This is a show featuring familiar characters that may also happen to be about activism more than almost any other out there.

Ultimately, the style of the show may not be altogether different — instead, it will just be tackling subject matter through a different lens. Here is some of what Ramirez had to say on that recently via TV Guide:

“I don’t know that the tone will be that different. We have the same amazing writers. The beauty of it is that it is set in present day. They have touched everything [on The Fosters] in the social climate but now they will get to be even more relevant…[Mariana and Callie] are in their 20s, kind of experiencing life and all the trials and tribulations of that — thinking you have it all together and you really don’t. I’m excited to see these girls take on Los Angeles together.”

We do think that there will be some other sporadic appearances from past The Fosters cast members — how much we see them could be in part on how the series finale ends and where some of them find themselves. Given how tight-knit most of this family is, we just have a hard time imagining that some of these other people will never turn up or be mentioned. People do move on, given that this is a huge part of life, but in the process they don’t forget about their family.
