13 Reasons Why season 3, if it happens, to be about healing

13 Reasons Why season 2

At the moment, there still remains plenty of questions as to whether or not there will be a 13 Reasons Why season 3. We understand that there may be a desire in some ways for more, but there are also some issues holding it back. For one, it’s not as though a third season of the series is needed — the story of the source material was done for the most part in season 1, and in continuing it feels like the show is going to have to discover a new purpose for themselves.

Will they find that in trying to find a way to move forward and show a community in vast need of healing? It’s something that the series does need, especially since the first two seasons were so violent, garish, and difficult to watch. If it continues to tilt in the direction of showcasing teen violence, there is a risk that it becomes known as exploitative — a criticism that it has faced in the past. The goal now really should be to try and find a way to make the world better, and that is something that executive producer Craig Yorkey hints at to Deadline:

“Whether 13 Reasons Why goes forward on Netflix, or just in the minds of fans, what happened to Hannah will always be the first clause of the story. The rest of the story is about young people, as so many young people, maybe all young people today (learn) how to heal from the things that have hurt them…to make the world that they want it to be, not just the world they are inheriting…and above all, how to take care of each other.”

If 13 Reasons Why does come back, this is the way in which it does need to continue — with the emphasis on healing and showing the other side. It can be all about great performances and human characters trying to get on the other side of unspeakable tragedy. It really doesn’t have to continue down a path of physical pain at all.
