Poldark season 4 discussion: Who is Lady Whitworth, really?

Lady Whitworth

The Poldark season 4 premiere is coming to the BBC next month, and one of the characters who will be at the forefront of conversation is Rebecca Front’s Lady Whitworth. She is a strong, formidable character, and she’s someone who has the potential to actually turn the tide in terms of how her son Osbourne treats other people — to be specific, how he treats Morwenna.

Unfortunately, signs do not point to this happening based on some of the new information that CarterMatt has seen. We wondered if Lady Whitworth was an inspiration for some of Ossie’s actions, just as we also wondered whether or not she would be someone who tried to stop them. The real answer here may lie somewhere in between, though we’re leaning more towards it playing out in a really awful way since she has the capacity to make things better and simply chooses not to. Speaking per BT, here is what Front herself had to say about this role:

“Having watched the show as a viewer, my first thought was ‘I hope she’s coming to sort Ossie out’ but then of course, dramatically it is so much better that she doesn’t. It is more realistic that she knows full well the kind of man he is and chooses not to do anything about it.”

It’s possible that the Lady turns out to be even more awful than this statement even suggests, but that’s something that we will learn as the premiere goes along. What is known about Ossie is that he is a powerful, influential man, but also that he is a man now threatened by what happened with Rowella at the end of season 3. For the time being, Morwenna seems to have smartly negotiated a way in which she will not be suspect to any more of his advances — but, given the world of this show, we’re not counting on that sticking.
