Summer TV Preview: Is World of Dance season 2 worth a shot?
What makes World of Dance stand out, if you missed the first season, is that it really is universal. You have everyone from individual dancers to duos to groups coming in from all over the world and different age ranges. So You Think You Can Dance is a little more specific in what they are looking for; meanwhile, World of Dance is a little more broad. It’s mostly just about finding the strongest and most-entertaining dancers in contrast to ones who can be groomed for more artsy, individual performances.
Given that the first season was so successful, you shouldn’t expect all that much to change this time around. Jenna Dewan is back as a host/mentor, and she is being joined here by the likes of Ne-Yo, Jennifer Lopez, and Derek Hough, who serve as the judges. What makes this show interesting is that it, at times, feels like a who’s-who of dance acts. There were performers in the first season who we knew already from either So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Best Dance Crew, or America’s Got Talent. This show is really a chance to see some familiar faces in a fun environment.
In the end, fun is just the best way to describe World of Dance. It’s an entertaining, accessible dance show that will probably hone some of its strengths moving into this new batch of episodes. They’ve got a better understanding of what works and with their success in mind, they probably have a better talent pool than ever, as well.
