How new Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe movie roles help Outlander

Outlander season 4 - Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan

This past week has been a very eventful one when it comes to Outlanderboth in terms of the series landing some new actors and also some of its own stars in Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe landing movie roles elsewhere.

We’re going to be discussing at length some of the new characters joining the show in the days ahead over here — with that in mind, today we want to focus more on Sam and Caitriona’s new roles in relation to how they help the Starz drama.

Let’s start here with the obvious — there is a huge benefit for Sam and Caitriona as actors to get to do something a little bit different. Whether it be Sam joining a comic-book movie or Balfe taking on a very different sort of historical drama, the two are getting to step outside of their comfort zone for a specific period of time. Actors always do want to find new ways to be creatively challenged and this is a prime opportunity to do that. Outlander films such a large percentage of the year that you have to take advantage of the breaks when you have them. With the hiatus after season 4 lasting until early next year presumably, there could be a chance for both actors to do a couple of movie roles depending on long it takes to be a part of each project. We also feel like it has to be rather fun testing these creative waters while knowing that you still have a stable job, a home base to come back to. Acting can be somewhat nomadic in a way for people without that sort of regular home for a number of years.

Beyond all of this, these roles help the show because not only are they allowing the actors to be creatively refreshed, there is a reasonable chance that they will be able to bring in new viewers to Outlander, as well. Both of these projects will have viewers who have probably never heard of Outlander before, and given how talented Sam and Caitriona are, there’s a fairly good chance someone will see these films and realize that they want to see more of them in other projects. The more ways to market the show, the better it is for everyone.

We’re excited to see what comes next for both Balfe and Heughan — and, of course, for Outlander season 4 when it premieres on Starz this November.
