How could Outlander season 4 introduce new characters further?
While it was probably clear to many book characters that we were going to see Lizzie Wemyss and some of the other names announced eventually, it’s nice to have them out in the open — at least to a certain extent. If you’re a book reader, there’s a reasonably good chance that you don’t need to know a whole lot more when it comes to information.
Yet, what if you’re someone who watches the show only? What is there that you need to know then? What we’d like to see Starz do a little bit more of in the future are some video spotlights with some of the new actors where you get a chance to hear a little bit more about who these characters are, how they fit into the story, and what they draw from as a performer to bring them to screen. Some of what intrigues us so much about television is hearing about the creative process on an individual, granular level. Of course, we get to read interviews from the showrunners discussing creative changes in the writers room, but it feels like for some of the actors we don’t have as many different opportunities to hear about the nuance that goes into character choices, preparation, and some of what makes playing a part interesting to them.
Also, given that fact that we’re meeting five performers / characters at once, it can be a little bit overwhelming thinking about each person individually without some greater context.
What we’re looking to do
Over the next several days, we’ll be profiling each character individually as a part of our Outlander character questions series we first introduced following the show’s season 3 finale. This will give us a chance to discuss all of them in greater detail — while we can’t exactly look at things from a performance standpoint, we can at least ponder over some questions that should be asked. This also should help us to progress through the Memorial Day TV news drought, one of the slowest periods of the year.
