Outlander season 4 castings: Meet Lizzie Wemyss, Gerald Forbes, more

Outlander season 4

For those of you wanting a flurry of Outlander season 4 casting news today, we’ve got some announcements for you within!

Per Entertainment Weekly, the series has officially unveiled the latest batch of names taking part in the upcoming season, and it includes a familiar face from Lord of the Rings in Billy Boyd! Take a look at all of the names and characters below. (There are minor spoilers ahead, mostly in the context of how some of these characters relate to the overall story.)

Billy Boyd – The aforementioned Boyd is going to play Gerald Forbes, a wealthy lawyer who also has a close friendship with Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta, played by Maria Doyle Kennedy. Jocasta is probably the new character over the course of season 4 we are the most interested in seeing.

Caitlin O’Ryan – We teased recently the casting of Lizzie Wemyss‘ father Joseph on the series, and we can now confirm that O’Ryan, a newcomer to the world of TV, will be taking on the part of Lizzie herself. Her story is tied closely to Brianna’s this season, and in the books her and her father both eventually end up at Fraser’s Ridge.

Natalie Simpson – The Les Miserables actress is going to be playing Jocasta’s personal maid by the name of Phaedre. We’re starting to get a good sense as to some of the characters around her, given that Colin McFarlane has already been cast to be Ulysses. We want the fullest portrayal of Jocasta’s life imaginable; this casting aids in achieving this goal.

Tim Downie – The Paddington actor is playing Governor William Tryon of North Carolina, a character who actually existed in history. He was a senior officer in the British Army who went on to govern both North Carolina and also New York during his life. Following the American Revolution, he eventually returned to England later on in life. We do like it when Outlander includes real-life historical figures into the series so it should be interesting to see how he is integrated here.

Simona Brown – Finally, the Roots actress will be playing Gayle, a young woman who is Brianna’s best friend and college roommate. We are most excited about this addition since it extends Bree’s social circle beyond just some characters who we have already met. Given that season 4 is the biggest one for Sophie Skelton’s character to date, it only seems appropriate.

New episodes of Outlander premiere on Starz this fall and while we’re somewhat surprised that the network has announced all of these castings at once, we’re also grateful given that this gives us something substantial to discuss! Hopefully more will come in the weeks ahead.
