How Lucifer bonus episodes pick up after season 3 finale cliffhanger

There’s a tremendous amount of excitement already on our end to see the Lucifer bonus episodes airing Monday night on Fox — yet, there may also be something to keep in mind while you watch. While these episodes were the final ones filmed as a part of the 22-episode season 3 production order, they actually were not meant to air immediately following the finale “A Devil of My Word.” They were created with the expectation that there would be a season 4 and would air in the midst of that run.

In a post on Twitter recently, show executive producer Ildy Modrovich discussed this further saying that “Boo Normal” in particular (the episode where Ella has an imaginary friend who may turn out to actually be a ghost) was meant to air as episode 5 or 6 of season 4. Therefore, it’s not going to address the big Lucifer/Chloe cliffhanger in the way in which you would imagine an episode airing after a traditional finale would. That would be saved instead for a formal season 4 premiere episode, which we may or may not be getting now given that the show’s future beyond Fox is still unclear.

Modrovich later added that these bonus episodes don’t spoil anything that would have been included in season 4 otherwise, so don’t think of them as some sort of enormous departure from what was originally going to be planned in the upcoming episodes. For now, we’re viewing them as a wonderful double-dose of enjoyment and also an opportunity to see if we can boost up Lucifer ratings to the point that another network or streaming service (likely the latter at this point) will be interested in picking it up. There is still hope and we think that all of the noise on social media is helping to get the show some attention. Few campaigns have been so consistently strong over such a long period of time.
