Outlander – Emmy news: Where Richard Rankin, Sophie Skelton, David Berry are submitting

Outlander

Going into this Emmy season, it was pretty clear where Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe were going to be submitted. Both have another chance to crack the nominees for Actor and Actress in a Drama Series — we’ve definitely made a case for them and will continue to do so, especially as we get into the home stretch of the campaign next month.

Today, though, we’ve learned via GoldDerby about where many of the other cast members are submitting. This is interesting just for the sake of seeing what the competition will be and gauging some of their odds.

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series – Sophie Skelton. No surprise here, especially since she was brilliant in “Freedom & Whisky.”

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series – David Berry, Tobias Menzies, and Richard Rankin. With the new rules for guest acting, it means that someone like Berry (who appeared in a handful of episodes) has to submit in this category. All three men were fantastic this season, even if they only appeared in a percentage of the season.

Guest Actress in a Drama Series – Lotte Verbeek. Geillis was fantastically evil, so maybe Emmy voters this year have an interest in giving her a nod … if they’re feeling especially wicked.

Guest Actor in a Drama Series – Duncan Lacroix. #MurtaghLives — could he also live on in the form of a nomination?

What are the chances for nominations here?

They are all longshots, even if personally we’d love to see many of them find their way on the ballot. Menzies probably has the best chance due to his entire catalogue of work on the show, but the one thing that is hurting the Supporting performers in general is that they are competing against other actors with more overall screen time. With people like Skelton and Rankin, they may have better odds next year following a larger role in season 4.

As of right now Caitriona Balfe has probably the strongest chance of getting an Outlander nod in any acting category, mostly because she’s been nominated by the Golden Globes multiple times already and that positive trajectory is a good sign. We’re not an Emmy voter, but there’s at least a good campaign both her and Heughan getting a nod. Hopefully, that turns into something more later this summer.
