Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Rehab, the Royal Wedding, and the Libya model

Last Week Tonight

Tonight, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver aired its final show of May, and of course it started off with a discussion of the Royal Wedding. How could it not? There are few things more entertaining that the sheer amount of indifference Oliver has to the whole ordeal. )(Sneakily one of the best parts of this episode was seeing local news discuss the wedding, with one crew admitting that them embarrassing themselves would probably get them on HBO.)

Beyond that, we also had yet another segment mocking John Bolton over its handling of the North Korea situation, especially when it comes to the words “Libya model.” That’s not one that you want to follow given how it ended.

Main segment – Rehab. We didn’t see it coming. Yet, it’s a trademark Last Week Tonight segment that teaches you about an issue you may not be fully aware of. Rehab is incredibly expensive and, beyond that, not all of them really work. This was an informative segment talking about the issues with many of them, including a controversial success rate and whether or not certain treatments work for everything.

Also, there are questions surrounding how you can start up an outpatient rehab facility. In some states, you don’t really need to do much in order to start a license. Do we think that there are good rehab facilities out there? Absolutely, but there are also some that are horrific. The unfortunate thin about this is that you don’t often know which ones are good until you are already there.

Overall, we do think of this segment almost as a sibling to the one about clinics designed to convince you out of getting abortion. Basically, this is another reminder that there are some serious problems with the way in which these centers are run.
