Chicago Fire boss hoping for more Dawson in the future

Chicago PD season 4 episode 2

Will Monica Raymund ever return to Chicago Fire in the future? At the moment, nothing can be counted for sure given that the actress recently confirmed her departure after six seasons.

Yet, if showrunner Derek Haas has his way, know this: There are still ways in which she could still be integrated into the story. Haas did his customary Q&A with fans this morning and, in the wake of the recent news regarding Monica, it’s clear that there is even more to talk about than usual. (Follow him on Twitter to keep track of these in future weeks.)

On if he knew about Raymund’s possible exit leading up to the finale – “Monica let us know in plenty of time that she was going to move on to new endeavors, but I hoped and still hope that this is not the last time you will see Gabby Dawson.  I don’t have to tell you, but Monica is amazing, and I don’t accept this is the end for her character.”

(Following this, Haas confirmed that he would “never” recast the character — it’s either Monica Raymund playing Dawson or nobody.)

On what he would say now to Dawson / Casey fans – “It’s not the end as far as I’m concerned.  It may not happen right away, but there is more of that story to be told.  I hope we keep going for seasons to come and get a chance to tell it.  I won’t stop hoping if you won’t.”

On what he will miss the most about working with Monica – “A million things but watching her performances live was the best.”

The fact that the Chicago Fire producers didn’t kill Dawson off, the obvious go-to move for any showrunner looking to write off a character, should tell you that there are hopes that she will come back in the future. There is a difference, though, between hope and false hope, and there certainly are no guarantees. We’ve already written a little bit about how the series should handle this in terms of life at Firehouse 51 and also life with Casey away from work, and it certainly should prove interesting to see what Derek and the team come up with.
