Outlander season 5: Preparing for The Fiery Cross

Outlander

In today’s Outlander piece we are looking ahead, which is something that we do often like to do with filming for the current season almost at an end. After all, it seems as though the production team behind the scenes is doing the same thing!

In a post on Twitter today, executive producer Matthew B. Roberts confirmed that he is currently reading/re-reading The Fiery Cross, the fifth book in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. Diving back into that book is important for the sake of making sure the story is fresh for the season 5 writing process. It’s something that Roberts and many other writers on the show likely did with Drums of Autumn going into the start of season 4, and they will do for just about every season the rest of the way.

While filming for season 5 may not be happening until early next year, there is a good bit of work that needs to be done before getting around to that point. That of course includes the writers coming up with new scripts, and those are produced many months before filming begins. The cast and crew need to arrive on set with much of the story at least tentatively set in stone. (We know that there are little changes that can happen along the way.)

One of the larger mysteries moving into season 5 is precisely how The Fiery Cross will be adapted. While we’re not a book reader we’ve heard that it could be one of the more difficult ones to translate to screen. We know that seasons 5 and 6 are based on this book and A Breath of Snow and Ashes (book 6 in Gabaldon’s series), but it has never been fully confirmed that each season will fully encompass a single book. It’s possible that the typical format is going to be shaken up slightly for these seasons and the material could be spread out in a different way.

Rest assured, though, that even when filming stops on Outlander a little later next month, work still continues trying to ensure that the show is as strong as humanly possible.
