At the top of this list is clearly America’s Got Talent, which is entering its 13th season coming up. On paper, there really isn’t all that much that is different about the show this year — Heidi Klum, Mel B, Simon Cowell, and Howie Mandel are still the judges. Beyond just that, Tyra Banks is returning once more as the host! The premise of the show is the same, the Golden Buzzer is back, and we know that there will be a wide array of different acts again.
Yet, even for a show this great (and we do think that it is great), there is still a little room for improvement. We mean this mostly in its embracing of variety acts. While the arrival of Simon Cowell as a judge has in some ways revitalized the show, it has also caused there to be an overemphasis on singers to the point that EVERY act last year to get a Golden Buzzer sang in some shape or form. Darci Lynne, who went on to when the entire show, was slightly different in that she was a ventriloquist singer … but still a singer nonetheless. If the judges embrace magic, dancers, jugglers, or danger acts, there’s a greater likelihood that others will, as well.
An important reason for them to do this is strictly as follows: The most successful alumni from this show are actually people not fighting to be on the Billboard charts. Think Mat Franco or Terry Fator, who like Darci is a singing ventriloquist. These are the contestants who can have sustainable careers.
Beyond just this, we would probably get to the live shows faster just because that’s where the bulk of the action happens and we can get more attached to the contestants. If you want them to be successful, you need that.
When does it premiere? – Think in terms of Tuesday, May 29 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. It’s right on the other side of Memorial Day!
