The Terror season 2 could happen, but it would be totally new story
For now, here is what co-showrunner Soo Hugh had to say on that subject in a recent interview with TV Guide:
“When AMC greenlit the show now almost three years ago, they greenlit it as an anthology show … Meaning Season 1 would be the story of the Franklin Expedition, and subsequent seasons would take on a new narrative that carried the DNA that we established in Season 2.”
We do think that there is a lot of ground that could be covered in a potential second season, especially if the show continued to interpret historical legends in exciting new ways. A part of what made season 1 exciting was that it brought to life something that hadn’t really been explored in this particular medium before and while you can question the validity of the Tuunbaq, it feels at the same time gritty and real.
One of the things that certainly does help The Terror in terms of its season 2 renewal chances is that the performances in season 1 were outstanding, so much so that Jared Harris and Tobias Menzies could each be awards contenders in their roles. This sort of exposure, plus some pretty solid ratings, should aid the series in its hopes of returning.
There is one bit of sad news to report, unfortunately — in the event that The Terror does return to AMC, it will have to do so without Hugh and fellow showrunner David Kajganich. They have chosen to depart for other projects so there will need to be a new vision and team captaining the metaphorical ship coming up.
