Agents of SHIELD season 6 finale: Is Coulson really gone?
In the closing minutes of Friday’s episode, Coulson was left off in Tahiti in order to live out the end of his life — this was a painful, yet powerful conclusion to his story. Yet, is it really the end? Coulson doesn’t seem to have much time and that’s a painful thing to think about.
For now, though, here is all Clark Gregg could say on this subject to Entertainment Weekly:
“I know that they’ve picked up the show, I don’t know if it includes me … I don’t know if it’ll just be me in flashbacks or sexy dreams with Agent May.”
It’s a funny line but the pain here is still the same — imagining Agents of SHIELD without Clark Gregg in it is not a particularly easy thing to do given that he is a foundation of SHIELD both on this show and within the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given that this is a character who already has a rather-unique grasp on mortality, it’s fair to wonder if he does have a chance at sticking around.
However, at a certain point you also have to wonder if a character is cheating death too much and it is time for the show itself to move along. At this point in time with Agents of SHIELD it may be time to start thinking along that wavelength. We don’t want to lose Coulson but if you find a way to bring him back, there needs to be a cognizance of what was established this season. (To think, the producers also have to think about the aftermath of Infinity War and the fourth Avengers movie based on when it is going to premiere.)
