Lucifer season 4 not coming to The CW, network boss confirms

Lucifer

We hate to start off the day with some unfortunate news, but yet, here we are: There is no Lucifer season 4 coming to The CW.

Speaking to reporters in a Q&A session to go along with network upfronts, CW head Mark Pedowitz proclaimed that they have had pretty much zero internal conversation about the show, which comes from Warner Bros. TV (who partially owns the network); instead, they are focused on their own development. Is this a smart decision by them? It’s hard to feel extremely confident that it is when you think about some of their upcoming lineup and also the ratings for some of their current shows as it is. Yet, The CW knows their schedule and their programming probably better than any of us do; if this is their prerogative we have to just move on.

We’ve been focused on The CW has the most-desirable home largely because creatively and in terms of the ratings, it made the most sense. Yet, there were always some concerns out there, with cost being the biggest ones. One of the reasons why many CW shows feature lesser-known performers at the time of their pilots is because it is less expensive to make from the get-go, which is also why many of their series film in Vancouver, Atlanta, or other tax-friendly places. There are exceptions, and we’re not financially-astute enough within the TV world to say whether or not The CW would benefit from Lucifer remaining in Los Angeles or returning to Vancouver.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter, but with The CW out of contention it’s time to move the #SaveLucifer efforts to some other networks. To be specific, we’re thinking here about the likes of Hulu or the DC Universe streaming service, with the former being a bit more of a viable contender given that it already has an established financial model and is already the show’s streaming home. There may also be other options beyond this but as of this writing, they are not clear.

If you are a fan of Lucifer, there are two things to remember here: Never give up the fight, but also be realistic in regards to the odds. One of the things we tend to proclaim is that all revival efforts are longshots. If they were sure things, they probably wouldn’t be canceled in the first place. The work that Lucifer fans have already done is incredible, and they are giving the show its best possible shot.
