The Blacklist season 5 finale: What makes this cliffhanger important

The Blacklist season 5 finale is coming on NBC Wednesday night and it, based on all early suggestions, seems like a game-changer. Everything that you’ve seen so far on the show is building up to a huge reveal — Reddington is put in a position where it seems like the only way for him to save Liz is to reveal the truth about the duffel bag. Basically, this puts him in a position where he is forced to choose between either protecting Liz or the secret that he clearly holds so dear.

It’s already been said that the secret of the duffel bag and the bones will be revealed at the end of the finale — with that in mind, the only other thing we can say is to be prepared for some absolutely insane aftermath.

So what is going to be coming in terms of a cliffhanger? Let’s go ahead and describe that via what executive producer Joe Henderson has to say on the subject in a new interview with TV Guide:

It’s a cliffhanger in that we’re obviously not answering everything, but our Season 5 finale easily presents the biggest truth we’ve ever given about Raymond Reddington. We’re putting it all on the line with this episode.

Ultimately, probably the hardest thing about The Blacklist finale is simply how long you’re going to have to wait on the other side of it for season 6 — there will be a rather-substantial hiatus that will continue until midseason, when it will air Fridays at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. That is easily the toughest timeslot that we’ve seen for the series to date — we’ll have a good chance to dive into that in the near future.

Here’s one last thing to be left to think about for a little while — Bokenkamp says that the sixth season will be fundamentally different from anything that comes before. As for what that could look like, time will tell.
