Shadowhunters season 3 episode 10 review: The sacrifice

Shadowhunters season 3 cast

Is Clary dead, and is Lilith gone? You may be pondering both of these questions after watching Shadowhunters season 3 episode 10 given that it, by far, was one of the biggest installments that we’ve seen so far. There were a number of huge moments over the course of the episode but it feels right to kick things off with the one that is the most shocking: What Simon did in order to stop Lilith.

In the closing minutes, what we effectively saw was the character make an enormous move in order to dispatch Lilith using his ability from the Seelie Queen; yet, in the process, it seems to have also taken away Clary. Simon told Jace (back thanks to Magnus) near the end of the episode that he believed her to be dead, which is certainly not what anyone out there wants to hear.

Yet, at the same time we have a very difficult time imagining that Shadowhunters is going to remove Katherine McNamara from the equation completely for a number of different reasons, She’s the start of the show, Clary is such a beacon of hope, and beyond that she ties so many different characters and relationships together. What was so interesting to us about this particular episode especially is that it did such a great job of actually managing to tie together a number of the biggest stories that we’ve seen this season. The story of Magnus and Alec was tied into what went on in regards to the battle with Lilith, and Luke proved himself to be very valuable by the end despite some of the problems he was forced to deal with in the end with both the police department and his pack.

As a whole, this was easily one of the most eventful episodes we’ve seen from a drama perspective in quite some time and we’re more than eager to see just what’s going to be coming up next.

In the midst of the personal drama, though, we did like that Simon was able to keep Becky with the knowledge of what happened, largely because that gives him an opportunity to have someone who really understands what he’s going through for a change. That really is not something he has been blessed with through most of the series so far, at least within his family. (That scene where he wiped his mother’s mind and convinced her that he was dead? Absolutely devastating.)

CarterMatt Verdict

Overall, Shadowhunters season 3 ended the first half of its season with some big cliffhangers and with that, questions over the future. How can any other threat top Lilith, if of course the character is really gone? We have a long wait now and with that, a lot of time to think about just how excellent this episode was.
