Lucifer season 3 finale ratings rise; what this means for season 4 effort

Lucifer season 3 finale ratingsThe Lucifer season 3 finale ratings are in and, as a result of that, there is a reason to have more confidence than ever when it comes to its ability to find a new home.

Last night’s new episode, entitled “A Devil of My Word,” ended up drawing in total a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic to go along with 3.23 million viewers. In terms of the former measure, this ties the best performance of the series since March — a very impressive feat given that May is a far more challenging time for most TV shows. (The weather is warmer and with that, there is so much less of an incentive for viewers out there to choose to watch something live.)

When it comes to total viewers, meanwhile, Lucifer on Monday posted its best numbers since early February, which is in turn even more impressive than what we’ve already described. (If you missed it, our full review for the finale can be found over here.)

Going into the finale, we made it very clear that getting hashtags like #SaveLucifer trending — yet, we actually think these numbers are even more important since they show the total level of fandom and urgency for a series quite like this. That’s especially true for a prospective network like The CW — it gives them a sense as to just what sort of numbers the series could bring in and even if the ratings slip slightly with the move, it may be financially viable for the network as a whole. The real test here in the long-term is figuring out a way in which to market Lucifer at a new home to appeal to old and new viewers alike. This is a fun, imaginative show with a lot of heart, and we don’t necessarily think judgments based on its title make that necessarily clear.

As we note in the video below (subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more), patience really is a virtue here in determining a new home. Shows often don’t find a new home for themselves right away. There are negotiations and so many more issues that tend to rise up over time.
