What happens to Lucifer season 3 ‘bonus’ episodes now?

Lucifer

While the Lucifer cancellation news obviously has dominated the show-related headlines and for good reason, there is still another interesting question to wonder: What happens now with the show’s two “bonus” episodes that were shot?

Before diving any further, let’s offer up a little more of the background here. While Lucifer season 3 aired 24 episodes, four of these were actually filmed back during the season 2 production cycle. With that, there were two more episodes shot as a part of Lucifer season 3’s 22-episode order. These episodes would have likely aired in the event Fox renewed the show for a fourth season.

So what happens to these episodes now? Speaking per TVLine, show executive producer Joe Henderson made it clear that these are episodes that are still going to see the light of day eventually:

Fox said they still plan on airing them, though I had heard no sense of when. Honestly, they’re two of our best episodes, so… I think the fans will get to see them in some way, I just don’t know when.

Given that these episodes were technically ordered as a part of the third season, it does feel like Fox has the airing rights to these installments unless some different negotiations happen. Maybe they will come on the air as some sort of two-hour event this summer, though we will say this: If Fox thought we were angry before about the cancellation, imagine how angry we’ll be if they never air these episodes. (Our personal preference would be that the series gets picked up and then another network, one who really wants these episodes, will get an opportunity to air them first.)

It was, in some ways, the fact that these bonus episodes were out there that made us optimistic that Fox would renew the series in the first place.
