Supergirl season 3 episode 18 review: The quest to save Ruby
As it turned out, that Reign was also more powerful than ever before. She now has the power of all of the Worldkillers which makes her borderline unstoppable. The only thing that can really slow her down is Lena Luthor’s kryptonite, which she wasn’t exactly interested in coming clean about. As she relayed to James throughout the episode, it’s understandable why she was hesitant to get on Kara’s side with this. The last thing that she wants to do is find herself in a position in which Kara is after her.
Through the majority of this episode, much of what we saw was the entire DEO crew trying to figure out how to protect Ruby while at the time stopping Reign, and that wasn’t pretty. For starters, Reign murdered Samantha’s adoptive mother Patricia, and then despite everything that was done to try to hide Ruby (including storing her at one point within Lex Luthor’s mansion), Reign was still able to track her down.
Ultimately, what this led to at the end of tonight’s episode was one of the most gut-wrenching reveals of the entire season: In the midst of a violent showdown in the closing minutes, Ruby learned that Reign was actually her mother. She saw her face and after that, everything became so much more difficult. Ruby had to watch Mon-El and Kara try to battle her mother — they didn’t want to kill her, but in the end how much of a choice did they really have in the matter?
In the end we saw Reign temporarily defeated because of Lena’s kryptonite, which Supergirl was grateful for after the fact. Also, Supergirl was able to use her moral code up against her.
The aftermath
Mon-El made it clear that he was going to stick around in order to ensure that Reign was defeated. Meanwhile, Alex had to do her part to reassure Ruby that the woman she saw was not her mother — which in some ways, she’s telling the truth.
Meanwhile, with J’onn tonight he continued to struggle with the fact that his father was losing his memory. This has been tough and emotional for him; yet, J’onn started to learn acceptance tonight. It was hard, but he was there for his father.
Oh, and one last thing: Lena confided in Kara about her frustrations with Supergirl, not of course knowing that Kara is Supergirl. Suffice it to say, this is going to be a problem.
CarterMatt Verdict
We knew that the ending to Supergirl season 3 episode 18 was coming — yet, the installment did somehow manage to be even more painful and heartbreaking than we imagined. Imagine being in Ruby’s position, suddenly learning that your mother was a monster.
