Outlander season 5 not filming until 2019, says Caitriona Balfe
Speaking per Digital Spy while at the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday, Caitriona Balfe confirmed that the cast “have an extended hiatus” of around seven months following the end of season 4 and the start of season 5 production. That could mean that filming takes place for next season starting in February. While there is one fewer episode being filmed for season 5, it’s probably still going to take much of the remainder of next year to film those twelve episodes overall. we cannot imagine the show coming out until early 2020 at the earliest, with the spring of that year being a strong possibility depending on how quickly some of the editing happens.
Of course, nobody likes extended Droughtlanders but in this case, we certainly understand it. This is a long and tough show to make at times due to the rigorous filming schedules and also just the overall length of it. With much of filming taking place out on location, it’s different from the average TV show in that you are displacing the cast and crew for a long period of time from home. Longer breaks here are necessary to allow the team get some much-needed rest and family time; beyond that, it does afford the cast an opportunity to do a few different things if they want to. Keeping people both relaxed and creatively satisfied is integral to a series’ long-term future. This is one of the reasons why a certain series in Sherlock has lasted for as long as it has on the air — Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman get a chance to do a lot of different things before returning to film new episodes. (Granted, it’s a little difficult to tell at the moment as to when season 5 is going to happen of that show, but we’re still confident that it will.
