Gotham season 5 renewal official; will be final season
Of course, with that there is also some bad news: It will be the series’ last. Tonight, Fox issued a last-minute renewal to the Batman origin story in a way that should be very much epic. Via the show’s producers (per Deadline), “the fifth and final season will wrap up this unique origin story of the great DC Comics Super-villains and vigilantes, which revealed an entirely new chapter that has never been told.”
While it is sad to get a final season for Gotham at this point, it’s something we speculated on earlier today for a number of different reasons, including the show’s recent ratings trajectory and also some of the Fox acquisition talk behind the scenes. If Disney does end up owning both networks, we have a harder time imagining some DC Comics properties sticking around there. While it would be cool to see the story of the show play out elsewhere, we do like the idea of writing towards a final season and getting a fitting conclusion.
As for how we want to see Gotham end, of course it would be great to actually hear the word “Batman” spoken — or to see potentially a few more villains we haven’t had a chance to meet just yet. In general, though, when looking at the series’ work as a whole there is a lot to be proud of. Despite having enormous hype and pressure entering the series we do think that the writers have done a really good job of creating a fantastic environment to play around in. They’ve done right by a lot of characters and given many of them some surprising depth.
