Supergirl season 3 episode 17 review: Lena’s creation; the Worldkiller showdown

Supergirl season 3 episode 17

How do you bring Samantha Arias back? This was the question at the heart of Supergirl season 3 episode 17, an installment entitled “Trinity” that was all about finding a way, regardless of however tough it was, in order to save her. That matters just as much, if not more, than trying to find a way to stop Reign.

The further that we got into this episode, the more that it became abundantly clear this was not going to be easy. The longer that Sam was trapped within her other dimension, the more clear it became that she was losing part of herself. The only way that Supergirl was going to be able to save her was to find a way to enter that realm — which she did alongside some help in the form of Alex and Lena. Bringing Lena on board was the one tricky part of the plan — she had kept a secret from Supergirl already, but part of the problem here was that Lena felt like Sam needed someone in there she could trust and since Lena doesn’t know that Kara is Supergirl, she had to bring her along to keep up the ruse.

What we saw in this other world was pretty gut-wrenching and powerful. Trying to not only get through to Sam, but convince her to keep fighting. They were able to get through to her for at least a long enough period of time that she was able to reveal the Worldkiller lair’s location. That set the stage for a final battle between many of our various heroes and some of the villains. Also worth noting, Alex got a new costume with some advanced abilities! She was now able to tackle this battle in a way that she wasn’t previously.

It wasn’t just Alex’s new suit that helped her friends in the showdown against Reign, Purity, and Pestilence — it was also the ability of the team to get some of these Worldkillers to awaken and turn on each other. There was so much crossfire and, in the end, we saw both Purity and Pestilence defeated. That means, at least for Mon-El and Imra, that they can head home. Their mission is complete and Pestilence is gone.

The aftermath of the showdown

Imra and Mon-El finally had a chance to celebrate, though Mon-El was clearly still conflicted about that. They’re not leaving right away, though, since Brainiac still has to figure out a way to make that happen. Meanwhile, Lena and Supergirl can celebrate being on better terms, especially since it doesn’t seem as though Lena has any more Kryptonite in her arsenal.

As a result of Lena being honest James decided to be honest in turn — he admitted that he was Guardian and with that, he needed to break into Lena’s lab at Supergirl’s request. Could this cause more problems? It’s certainly possible, but for now it seems like everyone is okay … or is it? This is possibly the biggest shocker of all: Lena knows how to make her own kryptonite, which could be trouble if she ever turns evil.

Unfortunately, Reign was still out there and based on what happened at the end of the episode, she seemed to absorb whatever energy was left of the former Worldkillers.

CarterMatt Verdict

Supergirl season 3 episode 17 was in a word epic — it was the end of one battle but, nonetheless, the beginning of another.
