Kevin Can Wait season 3 renewal hopes for Kevin James, cast
We’ll admit that when the Kevin James sitcom first premiered during the 2016-17 season, our assumption was that this was the sort of show that could easily be around for many years. However, things have been a little more chaotic than we imagined. First, you had everything surrounding the exit of Erinn Hayes at the end of season 1; following that, you had a pretty steady drop in the ratings. The first episode without Hayes in the cast drew a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Following that, the series has not drawn higher than a 1.3 and is coming off of its lowest overall rating to date in a 0.8. That’s not the sort of thing that inspires an enormous amount of confidence in the future of the series.
Yet, you then look at Kevin Can Wait in contrast to much of CBS’ Monday lineup, which has by and large been quite a hot mess this season. Most of the comedies on the network have struggled to perform, which is why in turn there have not been many official renewals just yet. We wouldn’t be shocked if CBS announces a dramatic overhaul of the night in order to bring in Murphy Brown and some other shows. We also wouldn’t be shocked if The Big Bang Theory is moved more permanently to Mondays rather than airing against football on Fox.
Do we think that Kevin Can Wait does have a chance at coming back in this lineup? It’s possible that it could follow Murphy Brown or another show on Mondays or serve as a Thursday show to air against football. We do think that it’s got more of a chance of returning than most of CBS’ other Monday comedies, thanks in part to some of its performance this season plus also the presence of James, a stable sitcom star who could boost the show’s ratings if it makes it to syndication.
We imagine that we’ll learn about a Kevin Can Wait season 3 renewal in one form or another by the network’s upfronts next week. Trust us — we’ll have more news the moment it becomes available.
